PhD defense of Apolline Pierre

A study conducted at the Grenoble Institute of Neurosciences shows that several proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease can be detected in mouse stool samples and that some of these markers show changes at a very early stage, even before the amyloid plaques characteristic of the disease become detectable in the brain. Published in Scientific Reports, these findings open up a new avenue of research towards simple, non-invasive testing methods, whose relevance must now be evaluated in humans.

Essential for cell division, kinetochore proteins also play an unexpected role in mature neurons. While a US research team had observed their influence on dendritic spine formation, Leticia Peris’s expertise helped uncover the underlying mechanism: these proteins control microtubule dynamics within neurons.

A major discovery made at GIN, which opens up new avenues for understanding the long-term side effects of this essential treatment.

Awarded of the Alzheimer's Foundation's 2024 ‘Innovative Programmes’ call for projects, Leticia Peris, an Inserm researcher at GIN, is studying the combined effects of toxic amyloid and Tau proteins implicatedin Alzheimer's disease. Her ambition is to strengthen neural connections in order to preserve cognitive functions.
