Epilepsy Day

Epilepsy is often unfamiliar to the public. And yet it is the second neurological pathology in France after Alzheimer’s disease, as it concerns nearly 500,000 patients today. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder caused by a dysfunction of the electrical activity of some neurons. Sometimes, neuronal electrical activity speeds up and provokes what are known as epilepsy seizures. The term “epilepsy” comes from the Greek word epilamanein -which literally means “by surprise”- because epilepsy seizures appear suddenly and are often unpredictable for patients who suffer from them. This day aimed to introduce and consider epilepsy is an opportunity to meet experts and to discuss and raise the public’s awareness of progress in research. Many socio-educational, clinical, neurophysiological and psychological aspects of this disease are covered through exhibits, round tables, conferences, videos and workshops.
